New Zealand SMEs face growing commercial risk as customers increasingly rely on AI platforms to research businesses and choose providers. A NZBusiness analysis says inaccurate or incomplete AI-generated descriptions could cause firms to lose visibility and leads without knowing why. The development expands the business case for structured, consistent online information alongside internal automation.
• We believe this signals that SME visibility now depends on data quality, not only search rankings.
• In our experience, inconsistent business information quickly undermines automated sales and CRM workflows.
• Our team sees a clear opportunity for local software providers to offer AI-readiness audits.
• Governance should cover external customer representation, not just internal automation.
New Zealand small businesses are being urged to treat AI-generated business information as a commercial priority, as customers increasingly use tools such as ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity to research providers and make purchasing decisions.
An analysis published by NZBusiness on July 23 says more than 80 per cent of people do not independently verify information generated by AI. That creates a risk for SMEs when platforms present outdated, incomplete or inaccurate descriptions of their services, or fail to recommend them altogether.
The development adds a new dimension to automation adoption. While New Zealand businesses are using AI to automate repetitive tasks, improve customer service and reduce operating costs, the same systems are also becoming an external channel that shapes brand reputation and lead generation.
The analysis cites audits suggesting that 72 per cent of SaaS, technology and financial services companies had at least one factual error across major AI platforms, while seven in 10 were absent from recommendations in their own categories. For small firms, maintaining accurate and consistent information across websites, directories, reviews and media channels is becoming essential to remain visible in AI-led purchasing journeys.
